CONTENTS 1. MEANING AND TYPES OF LAW
2. Jesus attitude to civil and religious law.
3. Jesus paid tax.

MEANING OF LAW
Laws are made to control the behaviour of people in the society. Laws can also be defined as the laid down rules and regulations of a place for people to obey. Without laws there will be lawlessness, disorderliness, chaos and destruction of life and property. Laws therefore bring about peace and harmony, happiness and the protection of life and property.
Image

CIVIL LAW
The Israelites had their own laws, which God gave to them to govern their relation with Him and with one another. The law which defines their relationship with one another are the civil laws.e.g paying of tax, missing with sinners and outcasts.

RELIGIOUS LAW.
The laws which tell them of their duties to God are called religious laws.e.g the Ten Commandments (moral laws); ceremonial laws like washing of the hands before eating; payment of temple tax; fasting, praying and alms-giving.

JESUS ATTITUDE TO CIVIL AND RELIGIOUS LAW.
Jesus had a positive attitude towards the civil and religious laws. He said he had not come to destroy the laws but to fulfil them.
Image

JESUS PAID TAX.
Paying of tax was one of the civil law of the Jews. Every citizen was expected to pay their tax for the provision of social amenities by the government. During the teaching of Jesus, He was asked if it was right to pay tax to the Roman government or not. Jesus replied ‘Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.’’ Jesus being a responsible citizen also paid tax. When He was approached by the temple tax collector to pay tax for the temple maintenance, he complied and paid the temple tax of half shekel from the money Peter brought out of the mouth of the fish he caught, as directed by Jesus.
Image

MORAL LESSONS
1. We are to obey the laws of our country, school, home and society.

CONTENTS:1. Love as the supreme law.
2. The qualities of love.

LOVE AS THE SUPREME LAW.
LOVE

According to oxford advance learner’s dictionary, love is a strong feeling of deep affection for someone especially a member of your family, friend or something. Love also means to care for or be devoted to somebody or something.

LOVE AS THE SUPREME LAW
Jesus in His teaching emphasised that the most important law was love. Jesus said that love was the supreme law because God’s love for man is the subject of the Ten Commandments.
Looking at the Ten Commandments, we see that the first part has to do with the love for God while the second part has to do with love for our fellow humans. Love is the new commandments that Jesus gave to his disciples (John 13:34-35)
‘’ A new commandment i give to you, that you love one another. By these
Shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another.’’

THE QUALITIES OF LOVE
According to 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, the following are the qualities of love:

LOVE IS PATIENT: Patience is the quality of being able to endure or bear suffering, toils, delay, anger or insult. Love help people to tolerate all difficulties that come on their way in relationship with parents, teachers, friends and others in the society without showing annoyance or impatience.

LOVE IS KIND: Love enable people to think nicely about others and do good to them. As students when you help others, like your friends, parents, neighbours e.t.c by assisting them and sharing what you have with them, you are being kind.

LOVE IS HUMBLE: Another quality of love is humility. Humility is an ability of not being proud, not seeing oneself as better than others, being moderate and decent in whatever you think, feel, say and do. The opposite of humility is pride, rudeness, arrogance and boastfulness.

LOVE IS FAITHFUL: Love makes people to be loyal to God, parents, friends, teachers, neighbours and even to oneself.

THE TRIUMPHANT ENTRY.
After Jesus finished His ministry in Galilee, He decided to go to Jerusalem. On the way to Jerusalem He and His disciples got to a village called Bethpage situated on the slopes of Mount Olives near Jerusalem. Jesus sent two of His disciples to Bethany another village near Jerusalem. They were instructed to bring back a young colt which had never being driven by anyone. If they were challenged, they are to reply that the master had need of it and it will be returned after use.

The disciples went and found things exactly the way Jesus instructed. They brought back the colt and laid their garments on it Jesus said on the colt and He, his disciples with people that had gathered began to move slowly towards Jerusalem. The people paid homage to Jesus by spreading their and palm leaves on the road for Jesus to ride over. Many hold palm leaves in their hands and were shouting as Jesus entered Jerusalem ‘’Hosanna in the highest, blessed His he that comes in the name of the lord’’.
Some people among the crowd called, the Pharisees told Jesus to silence his disciples and the people, Jesus replied:
‘’ I tell you, if these were silent the very stones, would cry out.’’
Image

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TRIUMPHANT ENTRY
Christians remember the triumphant entry of Christ today and celebrates it as Palm Sunday, a Sunday before Easter Sunday when most Christians go to church with palms in their hands.
The triumphant entry of Christ into Jerusalem shows that Jesus is a Messiah of Peace, who had come to bring peace into the world. Jesus rode on a colt instead of a horse to show that He was a Messiah of peace, because horse was used in those days as a symbol of war.
The riding of Jesus on a young colt which had never being used by anyone, shows His humility and the sacredness of His mission.

LESSON 43
THE LAST SUPPER

The Last Supper
This was the last meal Jesus ate with His disciples during the Passover celebration, before his arrest, trial, death, burial and resurrection.
The Jews normally celebrate the Passover to mark and remember the coming out of the Israelites from the land of Egypt.
Jesus celebrated the Passover with his disciples in Jerusalem. When the time came for the celebration of the feast, his disciples came to Him and asked of the place where they would celebrate the Passover. He directed them to a certain house to inform the landlord that He would celebrate the Passover in his house.
The disciples made all necessary preparation for the feast in an upper room. As they were eating during the feast in the evening, Jesus told them that one of them would betray Him. The disciples began to ask question about the person but He replied that the one who will dip his hand together with Him into the dish was the one to betray Him.
Jesus later took bread, blessed and broke it .He gave it to His disciples and said:
‘’ Take, eat; this is my body.’’
He also took the cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them and said:
‘’ drink of it, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant which
Is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’’
He made them to know that He would not drink of the fruit of the vine again until the day He will drink it anew in the kingdom of God.
Image

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE LAST SUPPER
The Jews celebrate the feast of Passover to mark the liberation and freedom of the Israelites from political bondage in Egypt. Jesus during the last supper gave the Passover a new significance .It now signifies the spiritual liberation from sin of all who believe.
The bread represented His body which was broken at His death on the cross.
The wine represents the covenant blood which God use to establish the New Covenant to give us the power to overcome temptation to sins.
The last supper, from the foregoing, represents the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross which saves us from our sins.
Christians all over the world celebrate the last supper on special occasion while some observe theirs every Sunday as the Holy Communion.

1. Meaning of betrayal
2. The betrayal and arrest

Betrayal is the act of giving out information about something or somebody to an enemy. It is an act of disloyalty and unfaithfulness

THE BETRAYAL AND ARREST
After the last supper Jesus and His disciples left for the Mount of Olives to spend the night there from where they went to the garden of Gethsemane. Jesus prayed in the garden because of the heaviness of His heart. After some time Judas Iscariot who was to betray Him came with a crowd to arrest Jesus because they have promised to pay him thirty pieces of silver if he can hand over Jesus to them. Before this time, Judas Iscariot had given the crowd he came with a sign to identify the person to arrest. Judas went near Jesus and kissed Him, on seeing this sign the crowd that came with him immediately arrested Jesus.
One of the disciples of Jesus tried to defend Jesus by cutting off the ear of one of the servant of the high priest. Jesus condemned the act of violence and said that those who engage in violent act would die by violent means. All the disciples of Jesus ran away except Peter who went along with the crowd that took Jesus away, as far as to the courtyard of Caiaphas the high priest, where Jesus was to be tried.

LESSON 6
TOPIC: THE PASSION OF JESUS
CONTENTS
1. THE TRIAL OF JESUS
2. PETER’S DENIAL. MATT. 26: 47-68, 69 -75

THE TRIAL OF JESUS
Jesus was taken to the house of the high priest where members of the Jewish Council (the Sanhedrin) had gathered. Here, Jesus was tried. At the trial, false accusations were made against him. They said he had said that he would destroy the Temple and build another, not made with hands, in three days. Jesus did not answer the charges because they were false. The high priest then asked Jesus whether he was the Son of God and when he agreed, he said Jesus was to die because of that. The people spat on him and hit him with their fists. They covered his eyes and asked him to identify who it was that stuck him.

PETER’S DENIAL
Peter was in the courtyard watching the trial of Jesus. One of the maids of the high priest accused Peter twice that he was with Jesus, but he denied both, the bystanders also accused Peter for the third time that he was one of the disciples of Jesus; for he was a Galilean. Immediately Peter denied Jesus for the third time, the cock crowed a second time. Jesus looked at Peter, and Peter remembered the words of Jesus that before the cock crowed twice he would deny him three times. Peter felt sorry for having disappointed Jesus by denying him. He went out and wept bitterly.
In the morning, the Council met and decided to take Jesus to be tried by Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea in Jerusalem. Pilate tried Jesus and found him innocent of all the charges made against him. He saw that the Council hated Jesus and wanted him to die. Therefore, he did his best to save Jesus.
There was a custom of releasing a prisoner at the feast of the Passover. Pilate asked the people whether he should release Jesus or a prisoner called Barabbas a troublemaker. But, the chief priest persuaded the people to have Barabbas released. When Pilate asked what evil Jesus had done, they replied that he should be crucified. Again Pilate asked what evil Jesus had done, but they shouted the more: “Crucify him.”
Pilate was forced to obey the wishes of the crowd. He released Barabbas, and handed over Jesus to be crucified.

LESSON 7
TOPIC: THE PASSION OF JESUS

INSTANCES WHICH CAN LEAD TO A CHRISTIAN’S DENIAL OF CHRIST AND HIS/HER NEIGHBOR
Peter denied Jesus because he was afraid that if he spoke the truth he might be killed, and he was not prepared to die at that time. In the same way, many of us deny Jesus and our neighbours because if we speak the truth we might be punished or lose certain privileges. Some of the conditions that would make a Christian deny Christ and one’s neighbor are :
1. Failure to speak the truth for fear of punishment
2. Tell lies to escape punishment or get some favours.
3. Cheating during weekly continuous Assessment tests or exams
4. Swearing in the name of God to tell the truth and then proceed to tell lies.
5. Refuse to stand up for Jesus by doing what is evil
6. Fail to defend Christianity when attacked by non-Christians
7. Refuse to suffer persecution for the sake of righteousness

LESSON 8
TOPIC: THE DEATH AND BURIAL OF JESUS
CONTENTS
1. THE CRUCIFIXION
2. The death
3. The burial

THE CRUCIFIXION: MATT. 27: 32-44
The soldiers took Jesus away and put a purple cloth on him. They tortured him by putting a crown of thorns on his head. They mocked him by saluting him: “Hail King of the Jews”. They beat him and spat upon him. After maltreating him, they took away the purple cloth and led him away to be crucified. On the way they met Simon of Cyrene and they forced him to help Jesus carry the heavy cross. Simon helped him, till they came to Golgotha, the place of crucifixion.
At Golgotha, the soldiers gave Jesus wine mixed with gall (a concoction) to drink. But when he tested it, he didn’t like it and so he refused to drink it. The concoction was meant to reduce the pain that he might suffer after he had been nailed to the cross.
The soldiers crucified Jesus by laying him on the cross and hammering nails into his hands and feet. Jesus suffered as the nails pierced his flesh. They then shared his cover cloth among them by casting lot. Then on the top of the cross they put the charge for which Jesus was crucified: “This is Jesus the King of the Jews.”
Two robbers were crucified with Jesus, one on his right side and the other on his left. The crowd mocked him to save himself from the cross, if he was the Christ. The chief priests also mocked Jesus as he hung on the cross saying he saved others but could not save himself. One of the two robbers also said bad things about Jesus.
Image

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF JESUS’ SUFFERING ON THE CROSS DEATH
The suffering of Jesus on the cross shows that suffering is part of human life. We shall all experience suffering in life and the experience of Jesus on the cross prepares us for the unpleasant side of life

THE DEATH OF JESUS: Matt 27: 45- 56
When it was noon, there was darkness all over the land till three O’ clock in the afternoon. Jesus then cried with a loud voice: “ Elo-I, Elo-I, lama sabac- thani?” which means : “My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?”
Some of the people thought he was calling on Elijah to come and save him. Immediately, the curtain of the Temple was torn into two and Jesus cried with aloud voice: “Father, into thy hands l commits my spirit”. When the soldiers saw all this, they confessed that Jesus was truly the Son of God.
The women disciples of Jesus, including Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee were at the place of crucifixion. They sympathized with Jesus and cried and wailed when Jesus died on the cross.
Image

THE SEVEN WORDS OF JESUS ON THE CROSS
1. Woman, behold, your son, Son, behold your mother.
2. Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.
3. Truly l say to you, today you will be with me in paradise
4. I thirst.
5. Elo-i, Elo-i, lama sabachtani: which means My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me.
6. It is finished
7. Father into thy hands l commit my spirit.
Image

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF JESUS’ DEATH
The death of Jesus on the cross is important for our salvation.
First, Jesus by his death atoned for our sins since God used his blood to wash away our sins and save us from the terrible consequences of sin.
Second, God used the blood of Jesus to establish the New Covenant; so that after the forgiveness of our sins, we might have the spiritual will to overcome temptations.

THE BURIAL OF JESUS
In the evening, Joseph from Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also a friend of Jesus, went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus to go and bury it. He took Jesus’ body from the cross and wrapped him in a linen shroud. He then laid the body in his own rock tomb and secured the entrance with a big stone. The women disciples were there to see where Jesus was buried.

LESSON 9
TOPIC: THE RESURRECTION AND APPEARANCE
CONTENT: The Resurrection
Appearances
Moral Lessons

THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST, Matt 28: 16-20; Mk 16: 1-8; LK 24: 13-49
To resurrect means to bring back to life or to rise from the dead after being declared dead. This coming to life again after death happened to Jesus as he had predicted on three different occasions before his death
On the third day after the burial of Jesus in the rock tomb, the women disciples, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went to the site early in the morning. They carried spices with them in order to anoint the body of Jesus and preserve it from decay. As they approached the tomb they saw that there was a stone covering the entrance of the tomb, and wondered who would help them to remove it. But, when they reached the place, they discovered that the stone had been rolled away by an angel of the Lord. The angel said to them: “Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified, He has risen, and he is not here; see the place where they laid him. But go tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will meet him, as he told you.”
When the disciples, Peter and John, heard that Jesus had risen from the dead, they ran to the tomb. They went inside and saw the linen shroud that was used to wrap the body of Jesus; but there was no sign of Jesus himself. Jesus was alive again.
https://youtu.be/Iu-KcrzfRFE

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESURRECTION
Jesus conquered death by his resurrection from the dead. This action is a sign of God’s victory over death. This victory over death is our hope for eternal life. Since God raised Jesus from the dead unto life. He will also raise us from the dead unto eternal life after we die. Christians all over the world celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ form the dead during the time of Easter. Christians share in the resurrection of Jesus Christ with picnic and merry making by going to “Galilee.”
Image

THE ROLES OF WOMEN IN THE RESURRECTION STORY OF JESUS:
1. They were the first to get to the tomb to embalm the body of Jesus.
2. They had firsthand knowledge of what actually happened.
3. They were the first to know of the empty tomb.
4. They were also the first to know of the resurrection of Jesus.
5. It was from the women disciples that Peter and the rest of the apostles got to know about Jesus’ resurrection from the dead.
6. The message to the apostles to meet Jesus in Galilee was given to the women disciples.

LESSON10
THE APPEARANCES OF JESUS AFTER THE RESURRECTIONS
Jesus Christ appeared to many people after his resurrection from the dead. These various appearances are recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, John and Luke.

APPEARANCE IN MATTHEW’S GOSPEL (Matt 28: 16-20)
When Jesus appeared to the women disciples, he informed them to tell the male disciples to meet him by a mountain in Galilee. The eleven disciples went to the mountain in Galilee as Jesus had directed, and there Jesus appeared to them. When they saw him, they worshipped him. But some of them doubted that he was the resurrected Jesus. He then gave them the Great Commission.
Appearance in Mark’s Gospel (Mark 16: 9-18)
According to Mark, Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene, who went and informed the disciples and the rest; but they did not believe her. He further appeared to two men who were going to the county side. The men also went back and reported to the rest of the apostles, but they did not also believe. Jesus also appeared to the eleven disciples as they sat at table. He scolded them for their hardness of heart because they had not believed those who saw him and witnessed to them .Jesus them gave them the Great Commission, and signs that will follow.
https://youtu.be/evoOaIQwITg

APPEARANCE IN LUKE’S GOSPEL: (Luke 24: 1-49)
The same day that Jesus appeared to the women disciples, he appeared to two other disciples who were going to Emmaus. They were talking about the suffering and death of Jesus Christ which they had witnessed. Jesus joined them as they were talking, but they did not recognize him. Jesus asked them what they were discussing. One of them called Cleopas asked him whether he did not know what had happened these last few days, in Jerusalem. They told him about Jesus, the Messiah, who was crucified and was raised from the dead on the third day.
They arrived at Emmaus in the evening, and Cleopas and his friend persuaded Jesus to spend the night with them. As they sat down to eat Jesus took bread and blessed it and broke it and gave it to them. Immediately the eyes of the two disciples were opened and they recognized him as the risen Christ. Jesus vanished from them and the two men rushed back to Jerusalem that same evening to inform the rest. As the two were narrating their experiences to the rest, Jesus himself appeared to them, and they were startled and frightened, Jesus said to them: “why are you so troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself, handle me and see: for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have.” He took some fish and ate it in front of them and they knew that it was indeed the risen Jesus.

APPEARANCE IN JOHN’S GOSPEL (John 21: 1-1, 20:19-29)
Jesus met the disciples in a room and said to them ‘Peace be with you, As the Father has sent me, even so l send you.’ One of the disciples, Thomas was not present when Jesus appeared to the rest and when. He was told he did not believe. He said: ‘Unless l see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nail, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe. A week later, Jesus appeared to them while Thomas was present. Jesus said to them: ‘Peace be with you’. He then said to Thomas: ‘Put your finger here, and see my hands: and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing. Thomas answered him: ‘My Lord and my God’. Jesus said to him: ‘Have you believed because you have seen me’? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe’.
Jesus revealed himself to the disciples again by the sea of Tiberias. He appeared at the sea shore at day break to Peter, Thomas, Nathaniel, James and John the sons of Zebedee, and two others as they were returning from fishing.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE APPEARANCES OF THE RISEN JESUS CHRIST:

LESSON 11
TOPIC: THE ASCENSION OF CHRIST
CONTENT:
1. Meaning of ascension
2. The great commission
3. Jesus ascends into heaven

MEANING OF ASCENSION
To ascend is to go high up. Therefore, the ascension of Jesus refers to his going high up to heaven. This event occurred after he had given the Great Commission to the disciples.

THE STORY OF THE GREAT COMMISSION IN Matthew: (Matt 28: 16-20)
The disciples went to Galilee to wait for Jesus Christ as he had instructed immediately after his resurrection. They assembled on a particular mountain that Jesus pointed out to them. They waited patiently for Jesus to appear. When he appeared, the disciples worshipped him. Jesus then gave them the Great Commission concerning their preaching, and the teaching and baptism of the whole world. He said to them: ”All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.”

THE STORY OF THE GREAT COMMISSION IN Mark :( Mark 16:15-18)
Jesus listed the signs that will accompany those who will obey the Great Commission. First, he affirmed the Great Commission: “Go into the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned”.
Jesus then listed the signs that will accompany those who obey the Great Commission: “And these signs shall accompany those who believe: in my name, they will cast out demons; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover”.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE GREAT COMMISSION
The Great Commission tells the disciples the nature of their work. They were to win souls for Christ by baptizing people as a sign that they had repented from their sins and had accepted Jesus as their Personal Lord and Saviour. The disciples are to preach to them and teach them the will of God as revealed to them by Jesus Christ. All Christians are to become evangelists and preach the gospel of salvation to mankind. When that is done, then all the miracles promised by Jesus will follow in their lives.

JESUS ASCENDS INTO HEAVEN (Mark 16: 19-20; Luke 24: 50-53)
After giving the Great Commission in Galilee, Jesus again met the disciples in Jerusalem. He led them out as far as Bethany. He was about to leave them and ascend into heaven. He lifted up his hand and blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven. And the disciples returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the Temple blessing God.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ASCENSION
The ascension of Jesus into heaven meant that he had finished with his work on earth. He is to return to judge the world. But before the Day of Judgment, he would come and baptize all believers with the Holy Spirit who will deliver them from the evil influence of the devil; and give them spiritual power to do God’s will and prosper in this world, and gain eternal life.
