2. PAUL’S STATEMENTS ON CHILDREN OF LIGHT (ROM. 13: 11-14)

INTRODUCTION
Christians living in the community are the salt of the community. As salt prevents food from decay, so Christians are expected to prevent their community from moral decay. But if they fail to do this then they are of no use to the community morally. We are to preserve values like truthfulness, decent dressing, uprightness, respect for elders, hard work, etc
Christians living in the community are also referred to as the light of the world. The presence of light makes people see the right path in a dark environment. In a similar vein, our lives as Christians should show unbelievers in our community the way to Christ, the everlasting light. We are, therefore, advised thus, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven”.
Christian religion demands practical manifestation of the teaching of Jesus in the daily lives of the belivers. Hence there is need to live in harmony with both Christians and non-Christian whose midst we found ourselves.

Peter described the christians as a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, who are called out of darkness into the marvelous light of God.
Having acquired a new life in Jesus, the christian now has an obligation to demonstrate his new life in his community. Peter reminds Christians of the circumstances surrounding their redemption as former enemies of God and slave to darkness who are doomed for destruction. They were now redeemed through God’s mercy in Jesus Christ. The followings are some of the roles expected of Christians in the community.

Some of these social vices ranged from oppression, corruption, cheating, drunkeness, injustice, greed, bribery and corruption, adultery, drug-abuse, stealing, immorality, and the latest called suicide bombings that become serious security challenges in Nigeria etc. The Bible says ‘They sell their righteousness for silver and there needy for a pair of shoe’. Christ was persecuted, his disciple were persecuted, and today, Christians often suffer persecution.

SUB-TOPIC 1: PETER’S MESSAGE TO CHRISTIAN UNDERPERSECUTION (1PET.1: 5-9; 4: 12-19)
Peter drew the attention of the churches to their chances of encountering trials and persecution.Base on Peter’s teaching, Christians should see persecution as an inevitable element of Christianity. As Christ suffered and was crucified on the cross, but was later exalted, Christians should that salvation is not obtained without sacrifice. Persecution is part of the cross which Christ said that His followers should be ready to bear. As Jesus suffered, persecution is the Christians’ share of Christ’s suffering, and a ground for testing the genuineness of their faith.

Our Father allows the sun to shine on both the good and the wicked and the rain falls on both the just and the unjust. If we love only those who love us, we have no reward. If we salute/greet only our brothers, we are still like the unbelievers. We must be perfect as our heavenly Father is.

1. Discuss Jesus’ sermon on the mount under love of enemies.
SUB-TOPIC 3: THE PERSECUTION OF CHRIST.
Jesus, the role- model for christians tasted several doses of persecution during his earthly ministry. Jesus was swiftly arrested after Judas had identified Him with a kiss. False witnesses were set against Him, in order to find reasons to put Him to death. Among the false charges they brought against Him were: That Jesus claimed that He would destroy the Temple of God and rebuild in three days, He also claimed to be the Son of God. The high priest on hearing this, tore his dress because, to him the statement of Jesus was blasphemy and a sufficient reason to condemn Him to death. They spat on His face, some struck Him, while some slapped Him and requested Him to prophesy to them who had slapped Him.
They also stripped of His garment, and put scarlet robe on Him and a crown of thorns upon His head. They mocked, knocked His head, and then led Him to be crucified.

The early christians were said to be too firm and uncompromising, resolute and rigid in their faith in the living God. So much so that they refused to worship that effigy (a stone or wood represention of a person) of the Roman Emperor as God.
To persuade and force them to comply with the order from Rome, the christians were physically torture, brutalized and humiliated. They were hanged, beheaded, burnt alive or feed to hungry lions and crocodiles. These were the time Peter wrote, urging the christians to persevere and pointing out to them the right christian attitudes to persecution.
SUB-TOPIC 5: CHRISTIAN ATTITUDE TO PERSECUTION. 1PETER 4: 12-19
Peter admonished christians to see persecutions as a test of their faith in Jesus. They were to rejoice since such was their own share of Christ’s suffering, so that they might be glad when the glory of Jesus would be revealed. He told them to rejoice and count it as a blessing if they suffered on account of the name of Jesus.
Christians are to face persecution without succumbing so as to bring honour to God’s name. Generally, christians should not be alarmed or surprised at the ordeals and sufferings that they may experience, for it is all part of a test of their faith in Christ.

SUB-TOPIC 1: THE ACCOUNT OF RESURRECTION IN MATTHEW 28:1-8; MARK 16: 1-8; LUKE 24: 1-11.

THE ACCOUNT OF RESURRECTION IN MATTHEW (MATTHEW 28: 1-8)
The resurrection story of Jesus Christ in St. Matthew’s gospel holds that early in the morning , on the day after the Sabbath(Sunday), Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James went to the tomb. There was a great earthquake, because an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, rolled away the stone, and sat upon it. The appearance of the angel was lightning and his raiment as white as snow. This created great fear in the guards.
The angel said to the women ‘Do not be afraid; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He has risen as He said.’ The angel further invited the women to come and see where He was laid. The angel finally directed the women to go quickly and tell His disciples that Jesus had risen from the dead , and to furtherinform them that Jesus was going before them to Galilee where they would see Him.

MARK’S ACCOUNT OF THE RESURRECTION (MARK 16: 1-8)
After the Sabbath following the day Jesus was crucified, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome brought spices in order that they might anoint Jesus in tomb. They went to the tomb during the sunset, on Sunday morning, the first day of the week. They wondered who would help them roll away the stone covering the tomb of Jesus. On arrival, they found that the large stone had been rolled away.
On getting to the tomb, the women were amazed to see a young man dressed in a white cloth, sitting on the right side of the tomb. He told them that Jesus was not there but risen. The angel also showed them where Jesus was laid and directed them to go and inform His disciples and Peter that they would see Jesu in Galilee, as He had earlier told them.

LUKE’S ACCOUNT OF THE RESURRECTION (LUKE 24: 1-11)
On the first day of the week, the woman who followed Jesus from Galilee took the spices which they had prepared and went to the tomb of Jesus in order to anoint His body. However, on getting to the tomb, they found thestone rolled away and nothing in the tomb.
While the women were afraid by what they saw, two men stood in dazzling apparel. As the women wer frightened, and bowed their faces to the ground, the spoke to them saying, ‘Why do you seek the living among the dead?’The men reminded them of the Jesus’earlier revelation about His crucifixion and resurrection. The women remembered His words, and as they came back , they told what had happened to the eleven apostles and to the others. The women who went to the tomb and brought the the news of the resurrection were Mary Magdalene, Joana, Mary the mother of James and others. The apostles received the news of resurrection of Jesus , as presented by the women, with doubt.

TOPIC: THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST:
CONTENT:
1. JESUS TALKS OF THE LAST JUDGMENT WHEN HE COMES.
2. HOW WE OUGHT TO PREPARE FOR THE SECOND COMING OF THE LORD

SUB-TOPIC 1: JESUS TALKS OF THE LAST JUDGMENT WHEN HE COMES. MATTHEW 25: 31-36
The Second Coming of Jesus is central to the christian belief and teachings. Jesus told His disciples that He was going to prepare a place for them, with the promise to come again and take them to Himself. (John14: 1-7)
The second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is an event every christian is looking forward to. It is an event that has a relationship with the resurrection of christians which is expected to happen on the last day. It has direct relationship with the parables of the kingdom, especially the parable of the Talents. Jesus said anyone who failed to use his talent, will lose what he has. Also the worthless servant will be cast into the outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Jesus talked of the last day judgment that would take place when He would return. His second coming is around the corner. He has given the christians the warning for them to be prepared and ready as the event will happen unexpectedly.

PAUL’S TEACHING ON JESUS SECOND COMING(1THESS.4: 13-18, 5: 1-11)
According to the teaching of Paul to the Thessalonians on the second coming of Jesus, he (Paul) said that Jesus went up to heaven in the presence of many witnesses and he (Jesus ) promised them that He would come back again. Jesus’ second coming would be witnessed after the lawless one must have deceived many with false claims of messiahship. At this point, sinners would be destroyed.
Paul told the christians in Thessalonia to get prepared for the coming of
D-day because it would be like a thief in the night. The Lord will descend from heaven with the Arch-angel, with the sound of the trumpets calling on the faithfuls to the rapture of God. The dead believers would rise first and those who are still living shall join together to meet the Lord in the air. He told the Thessalonian christians not to panic nor listen to false spirits or teachers because if they are caught unawares, it would be a great disaster. Therefore, they should not be taken unprepared. They should always be awake with sober reflection.

As Christians, we need to be mindful of what we say, think and do as everything will be subjected to judgment when Jesus returns.
Faith and love for one another are the greatest weapons towards adequate preparation for the day of the Lord. The Bible records that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. Such was the position of the earth before God’s creative activities. God used six days to create the world in the following order.
 On the first day, light was created, and was seperated from the darhness toform day day and night.
 On the second day, the firmament or the heaven was created.
 On the third day, lands, seas and vegetations were created.
 God created the heavenly bodies(sun, moon and stars)on the fourth day.
 On the fifth day day, the sea animals and birds were created.
 God finally created land animals and man on the sixth day.

Man was created in the image and likeness of God. Man was created with intelligence and ability to distinguish between good and evil. Man was equally given creative ability of God, so that he could modify the environment. He was also given dominion over the creatures.

THE SECOND ACCOUNT OF THE CREATION
In the day that God made the earth and the heavens, the earth was covered with mist. Then the Lord formed man out of the dust of the earth and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils.
He made the trees grow to provide food for man. He [planted the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God caused a river, which divided into four (Pishon, Gihon, Tigris, and Euphrates) to surround the garden and supply water to it.

The man was to till the garden, allowed to eat freely of the trees except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil to avoid death. Later God said that it was not good for man to be alone, a helper fit for him should be made.
Firstly, He created beasts and birds, and brought them to man to give them names, and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. King Nebuchadnezzar became proud of his achievements in the land of Babylon. He was walking on the roof of his palace in Babylon and he said ‘’Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty’’. He refused to attribute the success of his achievement to God. As the word was still in his mouth, a voice came from heaven and condemned is act of pride and said the kingdom shall be taking away from him and he will also be driven into forest and shall eat grass like an animal for seven years, until he acknowledge the sovereignty of God over him.

SUB-TOPIC 1: GOD’S CONTROL OVER THE UNIVERSE. GEN. 1: 26-31; AMOS 9: 1-6.
All things, including man, came into existence through the creative work of God and their continuous existence is subject to His will. God stays in heaven, controlling and watching man as he carries out God’s instructions.
As the chief controller, the existence, nourishment and sustenance of the entire creation depend upon God. Man is incomparable with Him. The highest responsibility of man is to assemble, organize or supervise what God has already made.
God had completed all the work of creation before man was created. In the light of this, man must not misuse the authority given to him by God for evil because he is accountable unto God on the day of judgment. He should not be power drunk because his life is subject to God’s control.

SUB-TOPIC 2: GOD CONTROLS THE AFFAIRS OF THE NATIONS JEREMIAH 18: 1-6
The book of Jeremiah analysed how God has control over the affairs of a nation. Jeremiah was instructed by God to go down to the potter’s house to work at his wheel. The vessel he made with clay was spoiled in his hand and he remoulded it into another vessel as it seems good to him. God spoke through Jeremiah to the nation of Israel that, He can do likewise to the nation of Israel, if they did not turn or repent from their evil ways. All nations are like clay in the potter hand of God.
The nation of Isreal was advised to turned away from their evil ways, so that God will not destroy them. As clay is in the hand of the potter to mould and remould, so are all nations in the hand of God. Any nation that will follow its own plan and will according to the stubborness of its heart will be destroy and pull down. More so any time God declares destruction concerning a nation or kingdom and such nation turns from its evils ways, He will repent of the evil that He intended to do to it.

SUB-TOPIC 3: GOD CONTROLS THE AFFAIRS OF INDIVIDUALS PSALM 127: 1-3. JEREMIAH 29: 11; ROM. 8: 28.
God is the sole controller of every individual affairs. Unless the Lord watches over us the watchman stays awake in vain. God gives to his beloved sleep. He has plans for his children, plan for welfare and not evil to give them future and a hope. God works for good with those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.
