TOPIC: FAITH AND WORKS
CONTENT:
1. Salvation is by faith alone not by works. Gal. 1 14
2. Genuine saving faith manifests itself through works. James 2: 14—16
SUB TOPIC1: SALVATION IS BY FAITH ALONE NOT BY WORKS.
In the field of religion, justification is getting into right relationship with God. Paul’s argument is that justification, redemption or salvation is not achieved by our obedience to the law or our works, but through faith in Jesus. Paul pointed out that the righteousness of God is meant for all people, Jew or Gentile who have faith in Jesus. The righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ is for all who believe in Him.
Paul acknowledge the Jewish desire to worship, but pointed out that they were still ignorant of the righteousness of God; but they went on making futile effort to establish their own righteousness but through the law. They failed to submit to God’s righteousness which is Christ Jesus.
The blood of Jesus shed on the cross serves as expiation for the sins of man. Christ is the end of the law that everyone who has faith may be justified. Faith is acquired by confessing with one’s lips that Jesus is the Lord, and by believing in one’s heart that God raised Him from the dead. Once this is done, one is saved. Man is justified by his belief and saved by what he confesses with his lips.
In summary, faith in Jesus is the only basis for salvation, available to all those who believe whether Jew or Gentile.

Talents are natural abilities or acquired skill to use for the good of all. The way one makes use of his or her talent shows how much grace such person has received. SUB-TOPIC 1: MEANING OF FORGIVENESS
Forgiveness is a decision to let go or give up grudges, bitterness, and anger in your heart against someone who offended you. It is also the act which helps you to pardon the offender. Forgiveness makes someone to reconcile and seek peace with the offender. There are three types of forgiveness:

SUB-TOPIC 1: JESUS TEACHING ON FORGIVENESS: MATT. 6: 12, 14-15
Jesus taught in Matthew that we should forgive others so that God also can forgive us. He taught that anybody who seeks forgiveness from God will be forgiven. Jesus wants us to forgive and make peace with our debtors and offenders. If we refuse to forgive people their sins, God will not also forgive us. Unforgiveness is a great sin before God.
PAUL’S LETTER TO PHILEMON:
Paul began his letter to Philemon by thanking God for the love which he learnt Philemon had in serving the Lord toward the Church. Paul claimed that he had a right to command him to do his bidding but he would, rather, he chose to use persuasion in asking Philemon to accept back his former slave, Onesimus who had wronged him but had now become Paul’s son in Christ. Onesimus had previously made himself useless to Philemon, but now as a Christian, he could become useful to both Philemon and Paul. He was, therefore, sending Onesimus back with love though he would have wished to retain him in his service in Rome. He, therefore appealed to Philemon, if he still regarded him as a partner in Christ, to receive Onesimus back as he would receive Paul himself.
REASONS WHY WE SHOULD FORGIVE OTHERS:
We need to forgive others because of the following reasons
1. To receive forgiveness from God.
2. To avoid behaving in a wicked way through revenge
3. In order not to add more to our sins and lose our salvation
4. To restore our relationship between us and the person
5. We also have been forgiven by someone in the past and may still need to be forgiven in future

1. Imprison our mind with bitterness and anger.
2. Dictate our actions by the unforgiveness because we will not want to do anything with the person.

Paul recognized the role of every member of the family and used these roles to describe the nature of our relationship with one another in the church. Paul taught that husbands should love their wives and not be harsh with them. He said that wives should be subject to their husbands. Wives should also be submissive and not be abusive or arrogant because such attitudes were against God’s role for them in the home. Paul encouraged children to obey their parents in everything. SUB-TOPIC 1: MEANING OF HUMILITY
Humility means lowliness of mind, absence of pride, arrogance or boastfulness. It is also the state of being humble, meek and modest. Humility is one of the greatest attributes of a good Christian. Without humility, one’s claim to be a Christian is not genuine.
PAUL’S TEACHING ON HUMILITY (PHIL2: 1-11)
In Paul’s letter to the Philippians, Paul urges the Christians to possess a sense of love, sharing in the spirit, affection and sympathy in order to complete the joy of being Christians by living in harmony with one another.
The Christians are warned to desist from any act of selfishness and conceit but should show humility. This means they should put others first before themselves. They should imitate Jesus Christ whose humility should be a model for them. Jesus was in form of God, but did not equate himself with God; instead, he humbled himself as a servant, up to the point of death. As a result of Jesus’ humility, God highly exalted him both in heaven and on earth. Therefore, Jesus is Lord to the glory of the father.
