2. Water Resources
3. Vegetative
4. Importance of the environment.
Sub-Topic 1: Mineral Resources in Nigeria
Nigeria is blessed with a lot of mineral and power resources, so that if they are properly harnessed will promote the industrial development of the country. The following are the minerals and mined in Nigeria:
1. Petroleum/Crude oil: petroleum is a sedimentary rock mineral mostly exploited around the Niger-Delta, both offshore and onshore in Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River and Imo states. Crude oil or petroleum is mostly mined by the process known as “DRILLING”. The first oil well in Nigeria was sunk in Oloibiri, near Port Harcourt, Warri, Egbema, Brass, Nembe, Oron, Abana etc. The crude oil mined in Nigeria gives rise to the three refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna. The crude oil drilled is refined into such products as the petroleum liquid gas oil. Though a higher quantity of Natural gas produced are flared up while the remaining is consumed by oil companies near the oil fields.
Method of Mining Petroleum
As stated earlier, the method of mining petroleum is the drilling method. In this method, the underground rocks are sampled and are duly tested for trace of oil. When the oil is discovered, well is sunk to reach the rock, with the aid of a drilling rig. The oil is then pumps out mechanically or if the pressure within the oil zone in the soil is high, then the oil will be pump naturally within the oil zone is the soil is three layers. The first layer comprises of natural gas; the second layer, petroleum and the third layer, petroleum which is at the last is water.
COAL: Coal was first discovered in 1909 around Udi hills in Enugu State and Okaba in Benue State. The Nigerian coal is the sub-bituminous grade. Before now coal was mined through human labour, but this has been replaced with mechanical equipments which have aided to increase its total production.
Methods of Mining
The method of mining coals is purely based on underground mining method. In this process, a tunnel is being build into the coal mainstream where explosives are used to excavates the coal, thereafter, light rails car hauls the coal from the funnel to the surface where they are either consumed locally or exported to other countries.
TIN ORE
Tin deposit is usual allowed in form. It has been mined for several years around the Jos Plateau in Plateau State in Nigeria. Tin ore contains more than 70% of pure tin and is rated as being of high quality. Today, beside Jos Plateau, Tin is mined in the following parts of the country, Bauchi, Zaria, Benue, and Kano.
Method of Mining
Mining of Tin Ore involves removing the earth with diggers, shovels and other similar tools to get to the tin deposits. However, this method of mining tin has long been replaced with mechanical devices. The Tin Ore is separated from the mud to get the real concentrated. The Tin Ore is either Smelted locally or exported to overseas countries through the Port Harcourt Sea port
COLUMBITE
Columbite is usually mined alongside Tin in all areas of Nigeria where Tin is produced. It has the same simple method of mining of Tin. The only difference among them is that Columbite is used for the manufacturing of rockets and Jet planes. While tin is use for coating containers in the canning industry. Nigeria is the largest producer of Columbite in the world.
IRON ORE
Iron ore is basement complex rock found in a large quantity in places around the Iron Ore triangle of Itakpe, Ajaokuta in Kogi State and Oshogbo area of Osun State. This mineral can also be found in Aladja in Delta state. The discovery of iron Ore has led to the establishment of the three major and Steel Rolling Mills in Oshogbo, Jos and Katsina.
Method of Mining
Iron Ore is basically mined by a method called “Open cast method”. The procedures are as follows:
Explosives are used to remove the over burdened rocks, then a powerful machine known as “DRAGLINE” is used to pile the iron heap. A powerful jet of water will be directed by a monitor toward the heap. The water is use to wash the soil out of the iron ore through a series of sluice boxes; the iron ore sinks to the bottom of the sluice boxes while the water carries the factory for smelting.
LIMESTONE:
Lime stone is a sedimentary rock mineral found in Ewekoro and Sagamu (Ogun state), Ukpilla-Edo State, Calabar- Cross River State, Nkalagu-Ebonyi state, Beneu and in Sokoto State. Lime stone is essential raw material for the manufacturing of cement. It should be noted that cement industries are located in all the states where limestone is found.
Method of Mining
Limestone is usually mine by quarrying method, here the over burden rocks are scraped off with mechanical excavators in order to reach the limestone. The limestone is then shattered with explosive and scooped out by the excavators into trucks which carry it to the factory.
GOLD
Gold as a precious mineral has been mined in Ilesha (Osun), Kabba (Kogi), Niger, Zaria, Aramoko,Ekiti and Sokoto area. Most Nigerian gold contain amount of silver, lead and zinc ores. The mining of gold in Nigeria is done with the use of digger, hoes and shovels to reach the gold concentrates. Although the quality produced is small in size, it is equally consumed locally.
LEAD AND ZINC
Lead and Zinc are sedimentary rock minerals found in Abakaliki of Ebonyi State. They are mainly used for the industries locally.

Mineral Resources in Nigeria
IMPORTANCE OF MINERAL RESOURCES TO THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIA
1. Revenue generation.
2. Employment opportunities.
3. Foreign exchange earnings.
4. Improve standard of living.
5. Provision of basic amenities.
6. Provision of infrastructural facilities.
PROBLEMS OF MINERAL EXPLORATION IN NIGERIA
1. Insufficient capital to exploit the minerals.
2. Lack of trained personnel to mine and exploit the various resources.
3. Instability in the price of minerals.
4. Poor transport facilities.
5. Lack of equipment for mining the minerals.
6. Problems of environmental and water pollution.
EVALUATION
1. List five minerals in Nigeria.
2. State the areas where the minerals are found.
3. State four importance of minerals to the economic development of Nigeria.
4. On a sketch map of Nigeria those resources you mention in 1 above are found.
5. Explain how one of the mineral is mine.
SUB TOPIC 2: POWER SOURCES
Powered resources are natural resources endowed by nature which are usually harnessed to generate energy needed for both domestic and industrial purposes. In Nigeria there are four major sources of power, these include: water, power, petroleum, natural gas and coal power. And these four sources of power are classified into:
i. Thermal power and
ii. Hydro electric power
THERMAL POWER
There are five major thermal plants in Nigeria, they include
1. The Egbin and Ijora thermal power of Lagos State. These thermal plants depend solely on petroleum for effective functioning.
2. The Sapele thermal plant of Delta State and the Afam thermal plant of River State, which depend solely on Natural gas for functioning.
3. The Oji thermal plants of Enugu State which depend on coal for functioning. These giant plants in Lagos, Delta, Rivers and Enugu depend on petroleum, gas and coal respectively to achieve the needed energy for both domestic and industrial consumption.
HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER
Hydro electric power simply means the power produced by water. The federal government of Nigeria, 1969, commissioned Kanji Dam in Niger State. The primary aim was to generate power in Nigeria, since then, hydro electric power has been supplied to various parts of the country for both domestic and industrial uses. Another dam was later constructed along the Kaduna River known as ShiroroDam, for the same purpose. This dam serves as a booster to Kanji Dam. The successful development and completion of the various power plants in Nigeria, has brought about rapid dramatic or rapid socio economic development in the country.
SOLAR POWER
Solar power is referred to as the generation of electricity naturally from the sun. Over the years in Nigeria, solar power had been incorporated into the power generating system of the country in terms of generation of power for street light, powering of some electronic gadgets through the help of a solar panel, that is usually mounted facing the sun to receive energy from the sun converting the same to electricity. Today solar power converters have been introduce in some cities both domestic and industrial use.
WATER RESOURCES
Water resources are those natural resources that are derived from water bodies such as Lakes, Rivers, Dams, oceans and even underground water. In Nigeria, we have two major rivers there are the River Niger, taking it source from the Eastern highlands and its joins the River Niger at Lokoja, Kogi state that earns Lokoja the confluence town. Other rivers include Ogun River, Osun and Osse River, each taking it source from the western highlands. Kaduna, Hadeija, Zamfara, Yobe, Ghana, Gongola and Rima rivers; all these rivers take their source from the North Central Highland. River Donga and Katsina-ala takes their sources from the Eastern highlands. Then Anambra River and the Cross River take their source from the Eastern Scarpland.
Similarly in Nigeria we have lakes. Some are natural while others are manmade. Nigeria is bounded in the southern part by the Atlantic ocean the water resources have been greatly harnessed for both domestic and industrial purposes. The rich water resources of Nigeria had been used for the generation of power, for irrigation to farmlands where they lack water, for transportation purposes, it has also served as tourism and recreation centres, it also serve as food etc. And had greatly contributed to the economic development of the country.
EVALUATION:
1. Discuss and give two examples each of the following:
(a) Thermal power plant
(b) Hydro-electric power (HEP)
2. On the skeleton map of Nigeria locate
(a) The thermal power stations
(b) The Hydro-electric power stations (HEP)
SUB-TOPIC 3: VEGETATIVE RESOURCES
TREE CROPS
Tree crops are those trees that produce fruits and yield income for the country. They are most times classified under cash crops, because they are among the country’s export crops. Tree crops include rubber, cocoa, oil palm, kolanut, etc.
Cocoa is grown in large quantity at the cocoa belt of western Nigeria, IKOM in Cross River and Abia State respectively. Rubber on the other hand is predominantly grown in Edo and western Delta State and very little parts of River. However all these tree crops are found in Southern part of Nigeria – stretching from the West to the East 0f Southern Nigeria.
FOOD CROPS: About 70% of the country’s population engages in food crop production. The main food crops produce in Nigeria include: Cassava, maize, rice, millet, sorghum, yam, cowpea, plantain, sweet potato etc. The production of food crop stretches from the extreme North through North central to parts of the Southern and South Eastern parts of the country.
CASH CROP
Cash crops are among Nigeria’s export crops. They include cocoa, groundnuts, rubber, cashew nuts, cotton. The map below shows where these crops are grown.

TIMBER: About 300 species of tree which yield good timber are known to exist in the forest of Ondo, Edo, Delta and Cross River States. However only about 40 species, including Iroko, Mahogany, Obeche, Mansonia wood and afara are scattered all over the forest.
VEGETATION: the vegetation of Nigeria is grounded into three major zones which are:
1. Forest Zone: forest zone is located at the southern part of Nigeria, stretching from East to West. The forest Zone is divided into rain forest and mangrove swamp (salt and fresh water swamp). The forest zone can be located around Benin, Sapele, Akure, Ibadan, Abeokuta the coastal areas of Port Harcourt, Warri, Uyo, Aba, Owerri, Umuahia and Calabar.
2. GRASSLAND ZONE: this include the Guinea Savanna, Sudan savanna, these areas stretched from Enugu, Lokoja, Ilorin, Makurdi, Oshogbo, Sokoto, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Dutse, Bauchi, Maiduguri and Damaturu respectively. The map below illustrates these vegetation zones of Nigeria.
